Thierry Alexandre
Life Artiste
One of the cliches of historical painting was that in great art the eyes follow you round the room. Well with 'Presence' they actually do. The artist is the art. Chatting with some grand old art-appreciator ladies they used 'it' to refer to the art object/artist in front of them when standing only a foot away, even though they had realized that there was a live person in there. The format removed much of the panoply of cues that signal humanity. Playful, and at the same time deadly serious
